Homeopathy and Intellectual Honesty

In view of the lack of plausibility regarding the principles of homeopathy, it has become fashionable to deny its therapeutic efficacy, although the evidence published on this subject suggests that it is effective. Nevertheless, scientific misinformation is being launched as an expression of ignorance or deliberate propaganda against homeopathy. The publication  “Homeopathy and Intellectual Honesty. A Commentary”, endorsed by several professors and medical societies in Germany uses three selected recent examples to demonstrate the lack of seriousness of these activities, taking into account the actual evidence.

In the name of the Dialogue Forum on Pluralism in Medicine (DPM) and other established and representative medical organizations, the need for evidence-based integrative medicine and its increasing importance at leading medical faculties in the USA and Germany are presented. It is shown that a fully orchestrated health care system, which seeks to meet the individually different needs and preferences of the population, requires integrative medicine as a critical but unbiased cooperation structure between mainstream medicine and selected complementary medicine approaches.

In this context, reference is made to a basic article on professionalism written by all members of the Dialogue Forum, according to which both conventional medicine and complementary medicine are equally obliged to be scientific. Ludwig Fleck and Thomas Kuhn have already shown that the followers of a certain paradigm strive to privilege their own paradigm through the state. The present article, however, refers to the fact that according to §5 (3) of the Basic Law, the state is fundamentally prohibited from judging a particular paradigm in the sense of seizure by a party. In addition, it is pointed out that the monopolization of a single paradigm goes hand in hand with the formation of totalitarian thought structures. In a concluding vote, the signatories, who consist of a large number of proven doctors and scientists in addition to established medical organisations, oppose the persecution of totalitarian figures of thought in our health system who collide with the Basic Law.
